The SL07 Detective Agency book nook ("Detective Famous Agency" on the box) builds a famous detective's private study that slides in between your books. A giant clock face fills the back wall, floor-to-ceiling shelves climb the damask walls with a library ladder, and the floor disappears under open books, loose papers and case files. A gilded filigree roof crowns it all. This guide takes you through the build in order, with a complete build video from unboxing to the lights coming on.
SL07 Detective Agency: Quick Facts
- What you build: a tall detective's study with a giant clock on the back wall, wall shelves of bottles and books, a corner bookcase, a filing cabinet full of tiny drawers, a corner desk with a lamp and a telephone, a carved armchair, a library ladder, crates of rolled-up plans, and a side wall with a map, a dartboard and a trophy rack.
- Format: a bookshelf insert that stands between your books, with a dark navy cover printed with the agency name in gold.
- Build video: about 40 minutes, heavily sped up. The real build takes several sessions: there are a lot of tiny books, files and props to make.
- Lighting: warm LED lights wired through the base, with a battery box and a button on the front of the base.
Before You Start: What to Have Ready
Our guide to the tools and supplies you need to build a book nook covers the basics. For this kit, have ready:
- Small, sharp scissors. Every book cover, open book and case file is cut out of printed paper sheets.
- A white craft glue with a fine nozzle. The video uses it for the books, the rows of books and the small props.
- Fine tweezers for the tiny files, the papers on the floor and the notes on the walls.
- A sanding stick to smooth the little wooden book blocks before wrapping them.
- A cutting mat and a clear table. You'll have dozens of tiny pieces out at once.
The Build Video
This complete build by Mini Wonderland Hub has no talking, just the build from start to finish, so each step below tells you where it starts in the video. Pause it whenever you reach the stage you're working on.
Video 1: The complete Detective Famous Agency build (41:00)
Step 1: The Books (from 1:30)
The kit comes with sheets of tiny wooden blocks and printed paper covers. Each block becomes a book: sand it, cut out its cover, wrap it and glue it. Then the books are glued side by side into rows that later fill the shelves.
- Sand the blocks first. A quick pass with the sanding stick stops burrs from showing through the thin paper.
- Glue the books into rows before they go on the shelves. A row is far easier to place than twenty loose books.
- Make all the books in one sitting. It's the most repetitive part of the kit, and it's done once it's done.
Step 2: Pictures, Wall Shelves and Bottles (from 6:00)
Next come the small framed pictures, a tall wall bookcase and narrow wall shelves lined with bottles and jars. Everything is built flat on the table before any of it goes into the room.
- Check the sheet letter on each board (A, E, H and so on) against the manual before you pop pieces out.
- Glue the bottles to their shelf strips rather than relying on the slots; they're tiny and easy to knock off later.
Step 3: The Walls, the Base and the Wiring (from 10:50)
The damask walls go up and the wall shelves are fixed to them. The base holds the battery box, with its button at the front, and the LED wires are run through the floor before the dark wooden floorboards go down.
- Lay out the wires tidily before closing the floor. Once the floorboards are in, there's no easy way back to them.
- Test the lights now, with the base open, so any loose connection is easy to fix.
Step 4: The Corner Bookcase and the Clock (from 13:00)
A corner bookcase is built and filled with the rows of books from Step 1, with a plant and a few props on top. Then the giant clock is assembled from its rings and dial and fixed to the back wall, where it becomes the centrepiece of the scene.
- Dry-fit the bookcase in its corner before you fill it, to make sure the book rows still leave it room to slot in.
- Take your time lining up the clock rings. It's the first thing anyone looks at, so it's worth getting it straight.
Step 5: The Filing Cabinet and the Case Files (from 17:00)
This is the most detailed part of the kit: a cabinet with a stack of tiny drawers, each one filled with folded case files and envelopes cut from the paper sheets. The finished cabinet stands next to the library ladder.
- Fold the files and envelopes with tweezers; they're only a few millimetres across.
- Leave some drawers open with files sticking out, as in the video. It makes the cabinet look used.
Step 6: The Desk, the Armchair and the Floor (from 24:40)
A corner desk is built and set up with a lamp, a telephone, a small clock and a stack of letters. A carved armchair goes in front of it, and papers are scattered across the floor.
- Place the loose papers with tweezers and a tiny dot of glue. Scatter them unevenly so the room looks lived in.
- Glue the desk accessories down; the lamp and the telephone are top-heavy.
Step 7: Crates, Open Books and Rolled Plans (from 29:00)
Small wooden crates are filled with rolled-up plans, and open books are folded from paper strips and placed around the room.
- Fold the pages concertina-style first, then glue the cover on. That's what makes the open books look full.
Step 8: The Side Wall, the Roof and the Finishing Touches (from 35:10)
The side wall gets a framed map, a dartboard, a trophy rack and a coat, then it closes the room. The filigree roof goes on top, and small notes and posters are stuck on the outer frame before the lights are switched on.
- Decorate the side wall while it's flat on the table, as in the video, before it goes into place.
- Check the lights once more before the roof goes on.
Common Problems and How to Fix Them
The paper covers don't line up on the book blocks
Sand the blocks smooth first and wrap the cover tightly around the spine before gluing the ends. A thin, even layer of glue keeps the paper from wrinkling.
Small props keep falling over
Bottles, the lamp and the telephone need a small drop of glue underneath. Friction alone won't hold them.
The lights don't work
Check the batteries, the connections at the battery box and the button on the base. Our guide on what to do when book nook LEDs aren't working has a full checklist.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the SL07 Detective Agency the same kit as "Detective Famous Agency"?
Yes. Detective Famous Agency is the name printed on the box and on the cover; SL07 Detective Agency is how we list it in our shop.
How long does it take to build?
The video runs about 40 minutes, but it's heavily sped up. Expect several sessions, mostly spent on the books and the case files. For a general view of build times, see how long it takes to build a book nook.
Is it hard to build?
It isn't technically difficult, but it asks for patience: there are dozens of tiny books, files and props to cut, fold and glue. If it's your first kit, our list of the best book nook kits for beginners has gentler options.
How do you turn the lights on?
With the button on the front of the base, next to the battery box.
Is there a PDF of the instructions?
The kit includes a printed manual. We don't host a PDF, but the video in this guide shows the whole build.
Ready to Build Your Own?
If you'd like a detective's study on your shelf, the SL07 Detective Agency book nook kit comes with everything you've seen in the video. For another build with a full video guide, see our TARDIS book nook guide.
