The Butterfly Collection Room book nook builds a collector's home over two floors, full of butterflies. Upstairs, a round window glows behind butterflies in flight and a giant butterfly spreads its wings on the wall. Downstairs, a carpeted staircase climbs past a butterfly showcase with arched doors, a grandfather clock, bookshelves and a carved armchair on a Persian rug. This guide takes you through the build in order, with a complete build video from unboxing to the finished book nook.
Butterfly Collection Room: Quick Facts
- What you build: a two-storey room with a butterfly showcase, a giant butterfly on the wall, a round window, a staircase with a carved railing, a desk with a lamp and a crystal ball, a sofa, a grandfather clock, bookshelves, a mirror and a gramophone.
- Finished size: 23 x 11.5 x 17.8 cm, sized to sit on a bookshelf.
- Build video: about 25 minutes, heavily sped up. The real build takes several sessions: there are many tiny books, butterflies and pieces of furniture to make.
- Lighting: warm LED lights on both floors, wired through the back.
Before You Start: What to Have Ready
Our guide to the tools and supplies you need to build a book nook covers the basics. For this kit, have ready:
- Fine tweezers. Every butterfly in the showcase and on the walls is placed with them.
- A clear craft glue with a fine nozzle for the books, butterflies and small props.
- A cutting mat and a clear table: the walls are decorated flat before they go up.
The Build Video
This complete build by Mini Wonderland Hub has no talking, just the build from start to finish, so each step below tells you where it starts in the video. Pause it whenever you reach the stage you're working on.
Video 1: The complete Butterfly Collection Room build (25:20)
Step 1: The Books (from 2:00)
Tiny wooden blocks are wrapped in their printed covers to make the books that later fill the shelves.
- Make all the books in one sitting. It's the most repetitive part, and it's done once it's done.
Step 2: The Small Furniture (from 3:30)
A low bookcase is built and filled with books, a bust, a lamp and a plant. Then come a small chest with a butterfly, a cabinet with flowers, and a desk set with a lamp, an open book, a clock and a crystal ball.
- Glue the props onto each piece of furniture before it goes into the room; it's much easier on the table.
Step 3: The Butterfly Showcase (from 8:20)
The butterflies are placed one by one into the compartments of the showcase, then the carved arched doors go on the front.
- Place the butterflies with tweezers and a tiny dot of glue, filling one row at a time.
Step 4: The Walls: Round Window, Pictures and Gears (from 11:40)
The walls are decorated flat: butterflies on the round window, a shelf of framed butterfly pictures, a mirror, and a gear-shaped decoration with butterflies.
Step 5: The Floor and the Staircase (from 14:40)
The Persian rug goes down on the wooden floor, then the staircase is built, covered with its carpet runner and finished with a carved railing.
- Press the carpet runner into each step as you glue it, so it follows the stairs neatly.
Step 6: Furnishing the Room and the Wiring (from 17:30)
The furniture is placed on both floors, and the LED lights are wired through the back of the book nook.
- Test the lights before closing the back panels.
Step 7: Closing the Case (from 23:10)
The side panels and the printed cover go on, and the book nook is finished.
Common Problems and How to Fix Them
The butterflies won't stay in the showcase
Use a tiny dot of glue for each one and let the showcase dry flat before standing it up.
The lights don't work
Check the batteries and every connection. Our guide on what to do when book nook LEDs aren't working has a full checklist.
